Reception Table Layouts and Seating
May 6, 2026
How you arrange your tables affects the flow of your reception. Learn the pros and cons of different layout styles.
There are three main table layouts. Banquet style uses long, rectangular tables that encourage conversation and feel communal — great for brunch or casual dinners. Round tables are the most traditional and allow conversation among eight to ten people at formal dinners. A head table includes the wedding party while a sweetheart table is just the couple. A seating chart is recommended for plated dinners to prevent chaos. If you have a buffet or family style service, you can assign tables but not specific seats. Always leave adequate room for a dance floor.
